The Myanmar armed forces claims it has taken control of a key the most notorious deception compounds on the border with Thailand, as it regains important land previously lost in the continuing internal conflict.
KK Park, located south of the frontier settlement of Myawaddy, has been linked with online fraud, money laundering and forced labor for the previous five-year period.
Numerous individuals were attracted to the compound with promises of lucrative positions, and then forced to manage elaborate schemes, taking countless millions of money from victims across the planet.
The junta, long stained by its associations to the fraud industry, now claims it has seized the facility as it expands dominance around Myawaddy, the key trade link to Thailand.
Junta Advancement and Tactical Aims
In recent weeks, the armed forces has driven back rebels in multiple parts of Myanmar, attempting to expand the amount of places where it can conduct a scheduled vote, commencing in December.
It presently doesn't control significant territories of the state, which has been fragmented by fighting since a armed takeover in February 2021.
The poll has been rejected as a sham by anti-junta elements who have vowed to block it in regions they hold.
Establishment and Expansion of KK Park
KK Park began with a rental contract in the first part of 2020 to construct an industrial park between the Karen National Union (KNU), the ethnic insurgent group which dominates much of this territory, and a little-known Hong Kong listed company, Huanya International.
Researchers suspect there are relationships between Huanya and a notable Asian underworld figure Wan Kuok Koi, often referred to as Broken Tooth, who has subsequently funded further scam facilities on the boundary.
The facility expanded quickly, and is clearly noticeable from the Thai side of the boundary.
Those who managed to flee from it describe a violent regime enforced on the countless people, several from continental African states, who were detained there, made to operate excessive periods, with abuse and assaults inflicted on those who did not manage to achieve objectives.
Latest Developments and Announcements
A statement by the junta's communications department stated its personnel had "liberated" KK Park, liberating in excess of 2,000 laborers there and taking possession of 30 of Elon Musk's Starlink communication devices – commonly used by deception hubs on the Thai-Myanmar frontier for online operations.
The statement accused what it called the "terrorist" Karen National Union and volunteer people's defence forces, which have been opposing the junta since the overthrow, for wrongfully holding the territory.
The regime's declaration to have dismantled this infamous scam facility is almost certainly aimed at its key backer, China.
Beijing has been pressuring the junta and the Thai administration to do more to end the criminal activities run by Chinese organizations on their shared frontier.
In previous months many of Asian workers were extracted of deception complexes and flown on special flights back to China, after Thai authorities restricted access to energy and petroleum supplies.
Broader Situation and Persistent Functions
But KK Park is only one of a minimum of 30 similar compounds located on the frontier.
Most of these are under the protection of ethnic Karen militia groups associated to the regime, and many are presently functioning, with numerous individuals running schemes inside them.
In actuality, the support of these paramilitary forces has been critical in enabling the armed forces push back the KNU and other rebel factions from territory they seized over the previous 24 months.
The military now dominates the vast majority of the highway connecting Myawaddy to the rest of Myanmar, a objective the regime determined before it holds the initial phase of the vote in December.
It has seized Lay Kay Kaw, a new town established for the KNU with Asian financial support in 2015, a time when there had been expectations for lasting tranquility in the territory following a nationwide ceasefire.
That constitutes a more important blow to the KNU than the takeover of KK Park, from which it did get a certain amount of revenue, but where the bulk of the financial benefits went to regime-supporting paramilitary forces.
A well-placed source has revealed that deception work is continuing in KK Park, and that it is probable the junta occupied just a portion of the sprawling compound.
The contact also thinks Beijing is providing the Burmese armed forces rosters of Chinese people it wants removed from the scam facilities, and sent back to stand trial in China, which may account for why KK Park was attacked.
