British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
