A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
