Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to US legislators and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's attorney submitted the plea acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

The defense lawyer declared he would attempt to have the legal matter thrown out for various causes including that his client, a opponent of former President Trump, was being singled out.

The former director was formally accused soon after the former president pressured his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney the legal representative informed the judge they aimed to present multiple petitions to dismiss the legal matter before a legal hearing, arguing the prosecution was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was improperly appointed to handle the proceedings.

The former director's legal matter was first overseen by the original attorney, who resigned under influence from Trump after his examination into a different rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey appeared in good spirits as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his spouse, his wife and offspring Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the former government recently fired.

Following the reading to the court state his rights and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, James Comey was inquired if he grasped the charges.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he stated to the proceedings.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about four months into Donald Trump's first term as president. At the period, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between Russia and the election effort.

During his tenure, James Comey triggered a backlash from Democrats when he declared just days before the 2016 election that he was examining presidential nominee Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against the candidate were not pursued, leading to negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.

Present Charges

Prosecutors assert Mr Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he misled the legislative body by claiming he had not approved an individual at the agency to release to journalistic entities details about the agency probes.

Prosecutors also charge the defendant of "wrongfully trying to influence, hinder and impede" the panel by giving misleading testimony to it.

Individual Responses

Through a recording the former director posted to his social media after he was charged, he said he was not guilty and charged Trump of behaving like a "dictator".

"Our household have understood for years that there are ramifications to challenging Donald Trump," he said. "We will not live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."

The accusations against the former director came after the former president published on online platforms demanding his attorney general, Pam Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and others.
